Kum Kau
About This Spot
Walking into Kum Kau on Myrtle Avenue feels like stepping into a quietly familiar corner of Brooklyn, where the rhythm slows just enough to savor the simple comfort of a well-loved neighborhood Chinese spot. The space is modest, a humble yet inviting stage for the kind of meals that invite you to linger over flavors steeped in tradition and care. It’s less about fanfare and more about the steady pleasure of a warm plate and a moment of pause amid the city’s bustle.
Here, the scent of garlic, ginger, and soy melds with the gentle clatter of dishes while conversations hum softly at nearby tables. The atmosphere carries a relaxed steadiness, the kind that encourages sharing familiar favorites and discovering comforting new ones in equal measure. It’s a place where locals and visitors alike come for a satisfying meal that feels both accessible and thoughtfully crafted.
The menu mirrors this spirit, offering an array of dishes that showcase the familiar joys of Chinese-American classics—each bite balanced with a precision that speaks to long-standing kitchen know-how. Whether it’s the tender, sauce-laden pepper steak, the perfectly crispy shrimp toasts, or the house special fried rice that fills the room with its hearty aroma, every dish invites you to slow down and appreciate a steady, honest meal. The portion sizes, often generous, nudge this experience towards something almost familial—comfort that can be shared with a friend or savored solo after a long day.
Despite a simpler, pared-down setting compared to years past, Kum Kau carries a quiet resilience, rooted in the kind of consistency that earns repeat visits from those who know their way here. The owner’s warmth and attentiveness add a personal touch, reminding you that here, you’re not just another patron but a welcomed presence in a space that has quietly woven itself into the neighborhood fabric over time.
For anyone exploring Brooklyn’s vibrant culinary tapestry, Kum Kau offers a grounded, sincere experience—a chance to connect with food that feels made for the everyday and moments that reward you quietly, one satisfying bite at a time.

I love Chinese food. They have the best fantail shrimps and pepper steak. I drive all the way to Brooklyn from Manhattan.

Kum Kau was our go-to for great Chinese food when at Pratt Institute. I know it's changed owners and location on Myrtle Avenue a few times, but was pleased to see my favorite appetizer, roast pork bun, is still on the menu. They're still big and incredibly tasty.. but there wasn't as much meat in them as back in the day (late '90s). Got 3 buns for $9. The current location is much smaller. It was busy so I guess the rest of the menu is still good, too. No seating inside or outside to eat, but has a long bench inside for people waiting for orders. Has a health department inspection sign with an A rating in the front window. Just disappointed that in 2024, I still had to pay with cash (they have a small ATM inside).

The food was great. We ordered Orange chicken with white meat and Pepper Steak with extra steak and extra sauce. Very flavorful and large portions. Very good value for your money.

Still as good as the old days. Prices were super reasonable for the food and specials considering the area.

I love this restaurant. I have not been around in years and the sitting section is gone, but the food is still as fresh and delicious as I remembered. So many options of dishes to choose from. The restaurant is clean and the owner is very nice. You want an amazing experience with great Chinese food, come here, you will not be disappointed.
